Even in Kyoto …

It seems to be matsuri (festival) time everywhere in Japan. Even in Kyoto. A good moment to reflect on life with a haiku from the 17th century poet Basho. He lived at the beginning of the Japanese Edo area. A time in which Japan was closed off from the outside world, which allowed it to develop a strong home grown culture. Here is his famous Haiku in English. It looks even better in kanji.

“Even in Kyoto

Hearing the cuckoo’s cry

I long for Kyoto”
